Dragon Con
Well I finally broke down and went to a Con. Like most things I was dragged into it by a friend and really enjoyed the experience. I suppose this means I should do more of the things that I've been meaning to, but never seem to get around to.
Anyway, J was on staff for one of the tracks, which meant I got a good deal on a hotel room (sharing with 4 other people admittedly) and a ride down to Con with her. We left early thursday from Richmond, stopped briefly around lunchtime and made it to Atlanta around maybe 7:30. Another of J's friends and I went and stood in the registration line for the better part of two hours and then ran around trying to meet back up with J and the rest of her group. We eventually found them and then I headed back to the hotel. Rested briefly and then got drunk in another hotel room with J's group (didn't take much I hadn't really eaten). J spent most of the weekend in the "Wheel of Time" track, which didn't really interest me, so I didn't see to much of her all weekend. I mostly ran from one panel to another in the technical/space, British Sci Fi, American Sci Fi, and EFF tracks. I also spent several hours each night in the Filk room, which was really cool.
Some of the highlights of the weekend were winning Red Dwarf Jeapordy (only because my two opponents were worse than I am), a panel by Hatty Hayridge and Norman Lovett (both Hollys from RD), seeing several cast members from B5 (the actress who played Na'Toth is a hottie under the costume), a panel by Robert Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye (he was a bit annoying during the filking though :( ), realizing I was sitting about three feet from Elizabeth Anne Scarbourough listening to one of the musical groups, realizing I was among a whole convention center of geeks, and getting to take pictures of various attractive and scantily clad femme fans under the guise of taking pictures of costumes (okay I mostly !was! taking pictures of costumes, but there are a few :) )
Some of the downsides were; despite being in a convention center full of geeks still not being able to come out of my shell enough to actually introduce myself to strangers. Also actually realizing that J and I are probably not going to go anywhere romantically, although she is still a really good friend. This isn't really bothering me, since we'd talked about how things were going and I knew that the probabilities were not lying that way. After this weekend, its sunk in that more probably won't develop. I don't know quite what made me realize that, although simply seeing how she interacts with the rest of her friends is probably a big part of it. Oh well, que sera sera. In any case despite these things all in all I enjoyed the weekend.
